Ohio River-Bottom Sludge Cake

Recipe

This recipe came from Tamar Myers’ mystery novel called No Use Dying Over Spilled Milk.  It is a chocolatey dessert which I had first decided to bake for a Thanksgiving dinner about three years ago.  It sounded good, so I gave it a try.  The name is funny and maybe a little unappealing, but boy did it turn out quite yummy!  Try it out yourself and let me know what you think:

Ohio River-Bottom Sludge Cake

You will need:
1 cup pastry flour
2/3 cup sugar
3 tablespoons cocoa
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup milk
3 tablespoons melted butter
1 teaspoon vanilla

Topping:
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup white sugar
3 tablespoons cocoa
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 and 1/4 cups boiling water

Instructions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.  Sift dry ingredients in the first list together.  Add liquid items in first list and blend well.  Pour mixture into an 8-inch-square greased glass baking dish.  Combine ingredients in second list and sprinkle evenly over the “cake” mixture.  Pour the boiling water over this but do not stir.  Bake for 40 minutes.  A fudge crust will form on top, with a thick sauce underneath.  Allow to stand for 15 minutes before serving.  Delicious served warm or cold, with or without whipped cream or ice cream.
