Book vs. Movie
How do you make a 58 page illustrated children’s book into a 1 hour and 45 minute movie? The book simply explains what the Grinch does to Whoville, but it never reveals why his heart was three times too small. In the movie rendition, Jim Carrey takes on the role to be the evil furry Grinch and we see how he came to be the nasty creature that he is. I always loved the classic rhyming book, watching the cartoon and listening to the soundtrack of the story every Christmas. When this feature film came out, it was neat to see what they could do with the material and (of course) Carrey plays the character so well. The big screen version is an interesting take on a tale that has been around for 55 years. I can’t say whether Dr. Seuss would be impressed or insulted but judging from his collection of wacky and fun stories, he’d probably let it slide in good fun! It would have been cool if Seuss made a prequel to the classic, explaining why the Grinch was the way he was but I think his main message was to tell people that as long as there are loved ones to spend time with at Christmas, the material things really don’t matter. Did you ever see the movie? Would you rather avoid it altogether and just stick to the original cartoon?
